“CRIME” APPROACH TO CYBER HARASSMENT

NINETARA is addicted to social media!

No matter what happens throughout her day, she never misses a chance to post on social media. People who follow her on various social media platforms are updated with her routine.

Ninetara adores singing and she was willing to chase her passion. She started by posting singing videos online.

Things were going great for her. The melodious tunes and huge response took her to a fairy tale world.

But she was feeling miserable one day. As she scrolled through the comments section on her posts she identified a person who was bullying her looks and trolling her by making memes which caused distress!

Ninetara would usually ignore such comments but to make things worst he slid into her dm’s.

She was heartbroken and began to panic after viewing the conversation.

The person morphed her pictures threatening to make them viral if she refuses to reply. He forwarded screenshots of a group chat where they shared images and objectified her.

To begin with, it is significant to be aware of Cyber Crime.

Cyber Crime
Cyber Crime

Cyber crime is a crime in which a computer or an electronic communication device is used to commit an illegal offense.

CYBER STALKING: CONSISTENTLY FOLLOWING A PERSON ONLINE AND THREATENING/HARASSING THEM. PUNISHABLE U/S 354D OF IPC.

CYBER PORNOGRAPHY: PUBLISHING, TRANSMISSION (in electronic form) OF OBSCENE ACTIVITY WHICH INCLUDES SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTENT. PUNISHABLE U/S 292 OF IPC

MORPHING: CREATING, PUBLISHING, CIRCULATING FALSE STATEMENT, RUMOUR OR REPORT WITH A MALICIOUS INTENT. PUNISHABLE U/S 505 OF IPC

Let’s plot a CRIME Strategy that she can approach while confronting the situation. Shall we?

C- CAUTION:

Identify messages/comments that are alarming, don’t let go of abusive people because they deserve a correct response for their actions. Ignoring those messages will only make the matter worst. So be very alert of the presence of toxicity on your feed that triggers distress. Put an end to allowing such individuals to continue performing any kind of malicious activity.

YOUR INACTION = THEIR PERPETUATION.

Now that you have recognized the threat, let’s look into the very next important step!

R- REPORT:

Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have certain guidelines that can be availed to report people who commit heinous activities online. Before you dive into leveraging a social media platform read the guidelines. Abuse and Spam on social media can be reported when you come across an inappropriate account/content. Don’t let this slip your mind, Report them right away!

I-INFORM:

We all know how much a tiny comment can mentally affect a person. During such difficult times, you can communicate about the issue with someone you are close to. Inform a trustworthy person in your life about what you have been facing all the while. Do not hesitate to communicate and be transparent because it is not your fault! It is time to voice out!

M-MAKE A COMPLAINT:

Register a written complaint with any of the cyber cells in India. File an FIR at a local police station to report them. File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. It is a convenient way to report a Cyber Crime complaint online. Making a complaint is a significant and necessary step. The concerned authorities will soon get back to you and take immediate necessary actions. The abuser will be punished according to the law for committing an illegal offense.

E-EVIDENCE:

Evidence is very crucial. Take a screenshot as having evidence is essential. It is mandatory to submit proof while you file a complaint. Hence, keep your eye on the ball and collect evidence. If you don’t do this earlier the harasser may find ways to get away from the issue. I can’t stress how essential having evidence is, without this, your efforts might go in vain.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A COURT OF LAW TO PROVIDE JUSTICE!

One of the immediate things people do is venting out online by posting about the abuse they experienced. Sure, people empathize and express their support but this activity might be troublesome.

The person who is been accused in the post can file a defamation case against your post. As no individual can be falsely accused without being proven guilty by law!

Thus, it is always better to file a complaint. The ideal example of this is the escalating rise of #metoomovement. The movement has its complications because there is no evidence of filing/charging a case against the abuser.

Please understand that a post cannot decide or provide justice to the wrong that happened with you!

Have you ever faced Cyber Harassment? If yes, you know what to do!
